The surface of the new hospital complex is about 22 hectars. The functions hosted by the different buildings are: 589 fully equipped beds for long-stay, day hospital and day surgery; 62 fully equipped ICU beds; 18 ORs for general and specialized surgery; 10.000 sm for laboratories, radiological diagnosis, radiotherapy; 28 elevators (for people and gurneys). The parking lot provides 1.205 parking stalls (both covered and uncovered). The structural system consists of deep foundations on piles, post-tensioned r.c. slabs with unbonded tendons, r.c. perimeter walls for the underground floors, 4m below the water level, shear resistant r.c. stairs/lift cores, r.c. columns. The use of unbonded tendons in the slabs allowed a reduction in the thickness of the slabs themselves, achieving an optimized configuration even with complex static schemes and varying geometrical configurations and boundary conditions. An in-depth study of the effects of the long term behaviour of concrete on the post tensioned slabs was carried out, with a focus on the joints and boundary conditions (i.e. connections to the cores and columns).
