Construction site supervision

In Italy, contruction site supervision is enforced by NTC 2008, the current Italian Building Code, and entails different tasks and responsibilities.
In ECSD, this activity is entirely carried out by skilled staff under the direct supervison of Prof. Franco Mola. The main responsibility of the construction site supervisor is to make sure that as-built object is totally compliant with the design specifications and that the administrative procedures implemented on-site are compliant with the requirements by the Law.
In Italy, as for structural elements, the quality control protocols are designed according to D.lgs. n.163/2006, D.P.R. n. 207/2010 and D.M. n. 145/00 for administrative issues; as for technical structural safety on-site testing protocols, the NTC 2008 are the reference documents. The new guidelines provided by UNI13670 are also a useful reference document used by the ECSD staff to design and interpret experimental tests on structural elements and materials.

Seismic vulnerability assessment of existing structures

Static load bearing capacity evaluation and seismic vulnerability assessment of existing structures are a very important activity in Countries such as Italy where a large number of older buildings, both public and residential, are operational but often non-compliant with the performance standards enforced in the latest version of the building codes.
In 2008, a new and stricter seismic zonation system was enforced in Italy, so that even buildings designed prior to that date in areas that were previously considered non-seismic, are now required to provide a non-negligible lateral load bearing capacity, which is not always possible without the design of adequate retrofitting interventions.
Seismic vulnerability assessment in ECSD is usually carried out in the framework of performance-based seismic design, by a response spectrum analysis, with FE models implemented in commercial software. If required, non-linear analyses, such as pushover analysis, are then carried out. The performance of the building is then thoroughly checked: different performance levels are considered, corresponding to increasingly intense earthquakes, for each of which a number of structural response parameters are checked against acceptance thresholds provided by the codes.

Consultancy for design validation

Prof. Mola is a renowned expert in structural design and his role as university Professor makes him a reference both for public institutions and for professionals searching for consultancy services regarding peculiar, complex or critical design solutions to be developed or validated.
In ECSD, Prof. Mola and the senior staff are thus often involved in advanced numerical and theoretical analyses regarding major issues such as structural optimization, durability, long term effects, construction stage analysis, conceptual design, wind engineering, in order to provide our clients with state-of-the-art solutions to very delicate problems by means of effective and timely consultancy services.

Research and development of new products and design solutions

ECSD cooperates with research institutions such as Politecnico di Milano, for research activities aimed at the development and certifications of new products for the construction industry, such as new or improved precast elements, connections, innovative materials. Consultancy services are provided, mostly involving the design and interpretation of tailor-made experimental testing campaigns and support to the client during the certification process.
ECSD is also active in the dissemination of the results of the research activities, by means of journal and conference papers, workshops, lectures…

Analysis of long term effect in complex structures

In recent years, the development of concrete technology has allowed taller and taller buildings to be entirely made of reinforced concrete. High performance concrete is a new, improved material whose rheological properties strongly affect the structural behavior. Prof. Mola has been active in research on the long term behavior of concrete for over 35 years, which allows ECSD to carry out complex analyses on issues such as column shortening in tall buildings, stress redistribution in composite steel-concrete sections, the effects on delayed restraints in construction stage analysis, prestressing losses over time, cracking and durability.
In ECSD these activities are carried out by using of state-of-the art software, coupled to deep theoretical knowledge for interpretative models and reference to the latest versions of codes and guidelines.

Expertise and judicial consultancy services

Consultancy services for professionals, owners and/or public prosecutors in lawsuits regarding structural safety and capacity matters is a core activity of ECSD and Prof. Mola in particular.
This activity requires coupling strong theoretical background with solid experience in the engineering profession, deontological ethics and the ability to deal with a number of different professional figures such as judges, lawyers, insurance companies, always acting in the client’s best interest.

Testing services

The fundamental role of a design validator is to be an independent third party expert able to review the design and highlight major critical issues if present and to supervise the construction process of any kind of structure to make sure that the as-built object is compliant with the design specifications.

In ECSD, this activity is entirely carried out by skilled staff under the direct supervison of Prof. Franco Mola. The whole construction process is monitored with frequent on-site inspections and strict protocols for on-site testing of structural elements and materials are designed and enforced in every construction site, with a specific focus on the peculiar issue of each structure. Specifically tailored static and dynamic tests are used to investigate the response of the as-built structures and compared to the results of purposely implemented, independent, numerical models, so that before the structure is open to the public, its capacity and safety are thoroughly checked and certified.
